ABOUT KROMYA
KROMYA ART GALLERY was founded in 2018 in Lugano by Tecla Riva, Giorgio Ferrarin and Adriano A. Sala as a result of a long-standing common passion and expertise. In 2020 KROMYA expanded its headquarters with a new outpost in Verona, Italy.
From December 15, 2020 to February 5, 2021, the KROMYA Art Gallery in Lugano presented the artist Davide Maria Coltro with the new project MedialMente: Paths through the Medial Framework. Curated by Alberto Fiz, the exhibition was divided into four areas that analyze the evolution of the Medial Framework through 35 works, focusing on the relationship with art history and the classic themes of painting such as landscape, still life, figure study, and abstraction.
The visitor was welcomed by a large Medial Framework where the four research areas were followed and renewed throughout the exhibition. Coltro developed an expressive mode that borders on performance, intervening several times, remotely, during the exhibition. Every time the visitor came to the exhibition, they were faced with a different work in progress, with a continuous alteration of the temporal dimension that enhances the mental aspect of the entire path, as suggested by the title of the entire exhibition.
The Medial Framework was invented by Coltro in 2001 and represents a new medium that modifies the enjoyment of the artwork as it allows for the production of an aesthetic and iconic flow in constant change. No longer a fixed device as in the case of video, but a work that, based on the artist’s inputs, develops a process that cannot be predetermined.
The exhibition analyzed the evolution of the Medial Framework starting from the landscape, poised between the romantic atmospheres of Caspar David Friedrich and the photo-paintings of Gerhard Richter. The section also included the presence of the Arborescences, forms of naturalistic architectures, where Coltro investigated the theme of birth and germination. The section dedicated to still life was characterized by the hybridization between objects that participated in the change of lifestyle, here placed in the conditions to develop their progressive otherness. The application of the Medial Framework to the logic of abstraction was not lacking, where the slow metamorphosis of the elements created unpredictable dialogues between masters such as Giacomo Balla and Piet Mondrian and digital aesthetics. The figure studies had as their fulcrum the recent Milanese personal exhibition at the Studio Museo Francesco Messina, in which Coltro had composed virtual dances inside imaginary theatrical backdrops, superimposing and modifying certain works by the Sicilian sculptor dedicated to his muse Aida Accolla, former prima ballerina of La Scala, with a particular attention to the sign component.
Each section of the exhibition proposed different reading levels and from each Medial Framework, the digital icons produced in a unique specimen derived, which seemed to fix the moment by shattering the temporal flow. It was a renewed procedure where the artist fixed the reminiscence of the image that was continuously reformulated inside the Medial Framework.
Davide Maria Coltro, born in Verona in 1967 and currently residing in Milan, is the inventor of the Medial Framework. His artistic research is aimed at the use of mass technologies with new architectures that modify the criteria for the creation, diffusion, and enjoyment of art. In recent years, Coltro has started a path of theological studies with the desire to nourish his artistic research through a profound reflection on the relationship between man and faith and the fundamental themes of human existence. His works have been exhibited in museums and public institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow, the MART in Rovereto, and the Galleria Civica in Trento.
Davide Maria Coltro’s exhibition represented a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the innovative world of the Medial Framework and discover the artist’s works through an engaging and exciting exhibition path.
