From May 21 to July 24, 2022, the monographic exhibition CAMERA 20: Davide Maria Coltro – Pax Naturae was held at the KROMYA Art Gallery in Verona. Curated by Alberto Fiz, the exhibition featured over 30 works by the artist, including an unpublished cycle that explores the transformation of floral elements seen from above through a lenticular process that combines photography, painting, and technology.
The theme chosen by the artist, “Pax Naturae”, interprets nature as an element aimed at a progressive pacification, in a moment of deep uncertainty. With his “Quadro Mediale”, Coltro modifies the use of the artwork, allowing to produce an aesthetic and iconic continuum in constant change. In this exhibition, Coltro’s work investigates the theme of birth and germination, as evident in the cycle of tree structures, where “the artist highlights that necessary growth that materializes before our eyes.”
The exhibition proposes different levels of interpretation, and from each Quadro Mediale derive the unique digital icons that seem to fix the moment, fracturing the temporal flow. “They are Filiazioni, or works generated by the Quadro Mediale but with independent interpretation, that become a memory of continuous becoming,” says Coltro. “It is the phase in which the gaze settles on the image and captures its contents.”
On the occasion of the exhibition, a comprehensive monograph of Coltro with his production of the last twenty years was published. The volume, published by Vanillaedizioni, is curated by Alberto Fiz and contains texts by Aida Accolla, Chiara Canali, Luigi Codemo, Joseph di Pasquale, Marcello Francolini, Maria Fratelli, and Patrizia Nuzzo, as well as an interview with the artist by Gabriele Perretta.
