KROMYA .YOUNG
KROMYA ART GALLERY aims to provide a space for young and emerging artists to showcase their works in the ".YOUNG" section. This section offers a more informal space that allows artists to present themselves and their works dynamically to both young and experienced audiences.
KROMYA Art Gallery inaugurated its section dedicated to young emerging artists, called .YOUNG, with Andreas Waldmeier’s exhibition entitled In-Between. The artist, who trained at the Zurich University of the Arts, presented a site-specific project composed of a group of new works specifically designed for the KROMYA Art Gallery in Lugano.
Waldmeier considers the relationship between his works and their environment to be fundamental. After sketching the projects virtually, he executes them on canvas, deciding step by step on the limitations of forms, colors, and order. For this exhibition, he created a predefined path that allows his paintings to interact with the gallery walls themselves, attracting visitors on a journey that ranges from large canvases to painted walls, from abstract sculptures to small divided paintings that create a reality of the artist’s own.
Waldmeier describes his painting as linguistic, meaning it is an expressive medium. For him, it is a kind of study of possibilities and their limits. The division between two squares often leads to a dialogue between opposing elements united by a quick and decisive painting gesture. This results in complex configurations of images, forms, figures, fragments of a story, or a pictorial tradition that provide only an idea of the artist’s complex world.
Waldmeier’s work is a total expression of his painting, which involves the participation of the spectator. He considers space an integral part of his vision, raising or canceling the wall through signs and painting. The visitor physically enters a comprehensive pictorial universe.
Each work is a singular event to which the visitor’s vision tries to give meaning through a process of discovery. The eye wanders over the pictorial surface, thinking it is able to identify and name something, but it will not be able to find its meaning within a total work of art. Enigmatic and impenetrable creations are shown to us, a place of in-between where we are suspended between the search for meaning and meaning itself.
The exhibition was hosted at the Kromya Art Gallery in Lugano, at Viale Stefano Franscini 11, from May 22nd to August 9th, 2019.
